The first attempt of the reconquest of Silves by D. Sancho I began in the beginning of 1189, with the help of a fleet of Nordic crusaders, mainly Danes, and Frisian, from the Netherlands.
Subsequently, King Portuguese intercepted a new fleet of crusaders on their way to the Holy Land. He managed to make an agreement with them, in exchange for the help provided, they could plunder the city. This new wave of soldiers was composed of English, Germans and Flemish. The squadron, consisting of thirty-six high-board ships and approximately three thousand five hundred heavily armed soldiers, departed from the Tagus River in Lisbon on 16 July, arriving at Silves four days later. Sancho I attempted the conquest of Silves, on which he imposed a harsh siege that lasted until September 3. King Portuguese made great efforts to prevent foreign warriors from indulging in great slaughter. Nevertheless, the result of the siege and attacks proved disastrous; A considerable portion of the population was killed and the city heavily pillaged and destroyed. Some of the survivors left for Seville, where they found refuge.
Two years later, the miramolim of Morocco took it back, passing it back into the hands of the Moors who for another half century would again control it. In 1242, D. Paio Peres Correia reconquered it definitively for the Portuguese, in the reign of D. Afonso III.
